What is Pokémon Yellow?
Pokémon Yellow, officially titled Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition, was the first-ever enhanced third version in the Pokémon franchise and remains the only fourth-version game released in Japan. It follows the same basic storyline as Pokémon Red and Blue, taking place in the Kanto region, but adds a fresh anime-inspired spin.
In this version, you don’t get to choose your starter Pokémon—instead, Pikachu becomes your loyal companion, just like in the anime. This Pikachu follows you around outside its Poké Ball, reacts emotionally to your actions, and becomes the heart of your adventure. The game also introduces updated trainer rosters, Gym Leader lineups, and a reworked Unknown Dungeon. For many fans, it was the first time they could truly feel like Ash Ketchum from the show.
How to Play Pokémon Yellow
Starting your adventure in Pallet Town, you'll quickly notice that your journey begins slightly differently than in Red or Blue.
Step 1: Meet Pikachu
Instead of selecting from Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle, you're handed a stubborn Pikachu who quickly grows to trust and adore you. Pikachu cannot evolve and stays with you throughout the game, walking behind you as you explore Kanto.
Step 2: Travel the Kanto Region
Your goal remains the same: defeat all 8 Gym Leaders, collect their badges, and conquer the Elite Four at the Pokémon League. Along the way, you'll capture wild Pokémon, train your team, and thwart the plans of the villainous Team Rocket, featuring Jessie, James, and Meowth—yes, just like in the show!
Step 3: Catch ’Em All (Well, Almost)
In a unique twist, some Pokémon exclusive to either Red or Blue can be found in Yellow—Scyther and Pinsir, for example, are available in the same version. Even better, you can collect all three original starters—Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle—through special in-game events.
However, certain Pokémon (like Meowth, Weedle, and others not prominent in the anime) are absent. Trading with other versions is necessary to complete the Pokédex.
Tips to Succeed in Pokémon Yellow
Whether you're a seasoned trainer or a fresh-faced beginner, these tips will help you master the world of Pokémon Yellow:
Balance Your Team Early
Pikachu is your starter, but it struggles against Ground-type Pokémon. Make sure to catch other types early, like a Flying- or Water-type, to support your team.Don’t Miss the Original Starters
You can get all three starters—Bulbasaur (Cerulean City), Charmander (Route 24), and Squirtle (Vermilion City)—so build a well-rounded team by keeping them in your party and leveling them up.Pay Attention to Pikachu’s Mood
Your Pikachu reacts emotionally to how you treat it. Use the in-game “check” feature to see how happy it is. A happier Pikachu performs better in battle!Battle and Level Up Regularly
Grinding may seem old-school, but it's essential in Yellow. The level curve can get steep, so keep your team trained to handle surprises like the updated Gym Leader rosters.Use Type Advantages Strategically
Type matchups are crucial—Electric moves dominate Flying- and Water-types but are ineffective against Ground-types. Always keep a varied team and stock up on healing items.Explore Every Area
Some rare Pokémon and valuable items are hidden off the main paths. Search houses, caves, and side routes to uncover helpful bonuses.
